Aurelia Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack have been performing together as Ash since 2007, and this partnership has led them to further explore Appalachian, Corsican and Ukrainian music in addition to the traditions they know best, those of Georgian and Balkan music. Drawing these seemingly disparate cultures closer to one another through their work, they are forging a genre of their own. They have chosen the name Ash (Æ) because it represents something of a dual nature–not singular, not plural, but exactly two. Ash tours and performs internationally to diverse audiences in venues ranging from Joe’s Pub in New York City to Ashkenaz in Berkeley, CA, and on stages in Bulgaria and the Republic of Georgia. In addition to their first album, released in 2009, Ash is featured in the soundtracks of “The Great Soviet Eclipse” and “The Book of Wisdom and Lies”, the latest two films produced under the auspices of The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles, CA. Recently, Aurelia and Eva have collaborated with Yara Arts Group on the theatre performances “Winter Sun” and “Raven” at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre, and have recently begun working together with Urban Women/Village Song (Ethel Raim and Catherine Foster). Ash will spend most of 2011 touring and teaching in the United States. Visit www.aesings.com for updated calendar and performance information.
“It is extremely rare for singers from one cultural frame to capture the true essence and expression of another culture, no less of several different cultures. Aurelia Lucy Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack do this effortlessly and with extraordinary technical skill and artistic innovation. Their singing simply takes my breath away. ”
